St Albans  vs  Croxley Falcons (12th March 2006)

The Under 13 West side maintained the pressure on the sides above them in the table with this comfortable home win.  The goals began after only 5 minutes as a good through ball from Ryan Rickard was played to Jamie Heaffey (playing up front instead of in his usual centre-back role) whose strength and pace took him clear of the Croxley defence where he opened the scoring with a powerful shot.  A few minutes later Jamie almost doubled the lead when he rounded the keeper but unfortunately a defender managed to get back just in time to clear the resulting shot.

Soon after, Chris Welch was unlucky not to score when his volley was parried and Charlie Craigen went just over the bar with the rebound.  The second goal finally arrived as the Croxley goalkeeper failed to control a shot from Ryan R, and Jamie pounced to tap the ball into an empty net.  Two minutes later Jamie got his hat-trick as he received a great ball from Matt Peckham and scored with a low shot that the keeper couldn’t reach.

Behind the strikers, the midfield and defence were dominating possession so much that Croxley had very few attacking opportunities.  Jamie’s fourth wasn’t long in coming as he ran onto a good through ball from George Figg to give West a 4-0 half time lead.

The second half saw Croxley make more of an impact as West sat on their lead a bit and a few positional changes took place.  During one of the Croxley attacks, the referee awarded a dubious penalty for handball; however a combination of Martin Robinson in goal, and the crossbar, saw the penalty saved.  Further forward, a good run and cross from Charlie C was met by Tom Weaver whose strong shot was saved.

West finally added to their lead following a free-kick from George as Chris Welch received the ball and laid it back for Carl Biggs to shoot and make it 5-0.  Soon after, the sixth goal arrived as a good cross by Carl was tapped in by Matt.  To their credit though, Croxley hadn’t given up, and following a period of attacking pressure they were awarded another penalty for hand ball, which this time they scored from.

The final 6-1 score line was fully deserved for the West team, as despite not playing to their potential, and not making enough of their wide players, they controlled virtually the whole game with some excellent work from Stuart Cole and Ryan Maher in defence, while Jamie’s first half cameo performance in attack was too much for the Croxley defence to cope with.

Final Score:  St. Albans West 6-1  Croxley Falcons
