Fortress Highfield was breeched as West
lost their first home game of the season.  West had most of the
possession and loads of early pressure but just couldn't put the ball in
the net on a heavy pitch.  Numerous corners went across the box but
nobody could get a decent touch on them, while George Figg's attempted
lob went just wide after 4 mins.  Shortly after, a poor clearance fell
to Jamie Heaffey outside the box but the shot was saved, while Charlie
Craigen's shot following his excellent run down the wing also went just
wide.  Martin Robinson in the West goal was then forced to make a good
save on a rare Raiders break.  But the pressure went straight back and
Chris Welch beat several players to be saved again. A good through ball
from Jamie to Scott went just wide as the keeper came off his line and
he attempted to lob him, and again Scott was stopped a few minutes later
when the keeper saved one on one.
The second half started brightly when Tom Weaver, who had a great game on the right, made a good run and as the keeper came off his line the ball shot past him and Scott fired in from close range as a defender lunged to clear off the line. West then made a very uncharacteristic hash and instead of clearing the ball to safety, lost the ball just outside the box and the Raiders attacker finished well. West still dominated and Tom hit the bar and the rebound was unfortunately sent over the bar. West then had shot cleared off the line and two goal mouth opportunities were some how scrambled clear. Tom's great run and cross saw Scott's header saved as was another good effort from Chris. Again West were punished on a counter attack although Martin had more to do in the second half and made a couple of good saves. West kept pushing forward to try and equalise and got caught on the break with a great run and finish in the top corner, however he should never have got out of his half as West failed to put in a decent tackle. With time running out a superb cross from Elliott Jay was headed home with a great header from Chris. A couple of rare mistakes at the back cost West but with so many chances it shouldn't have made any difference as the game should have been beyond Raiders at half time. Final Score: St Albans West 2 - 3 Berkhamsted Raiders |
