St Albans City West vs Everett
Rovers Red
(16th Dec)
West drew their first
match of the season against Everett Rovers Red, but both sides could feel
they might have won. Things couldn’t have started better for West, as after
just three minutes they took the lead. A good cross from Carl Biggs was met
by Chris Welch, whose strong shot was tipped over the bar by the Everett
keeper. George Figg’s resultant corner was then headed in by Greg Springall.
The early goal gave the players confidence and they were soon playing some
very good football, with the midfield quartet of Tom Weaver, Chris, George
and Carl passing the ball really well. Unfortunately after 26 minutes, West
failed to clear an Everett corner and they equalized, while soon after they
lost Jamie Heaffey injured. The first half ended all square at 1-1, but West
were unlucky to go in level as they had chances to regain the lead.
West were not as dominant in the second half,
and struggled to play with the same fluency. Alex Cobb in goal (left) was
called upon numerous times and made some great saves as Everett looked more
like scoring than West, however towards the end Greg Springall was unlucky
with a couple of strong shots, one of which the Everett keeper made a good
save from.
Neither side was able to
grab a winner, and so the match ended 1-1. It was a close game and while
both sides had opportunities to win, a draw was probably a fair result. The
boys played some good football, especially in the first half, but shouldn’t
be too disappointed with the result.
