West faced a very difficult County Cup second round tie away at Abbots Youth, who are unbeaten this season in the Watford League top division (five higher than West) with four win from four, and a +17 goal difference already! The West boys knew they had a battle on their hands to limit the goal count in a likely defeat and they certainly had a go. They were superb in the first half, and battled magnificently to keep a very skillful Abbots team at bay. They were organised well, and their teamwork was exceptional, with all ten outfield players fighting for every ball and working hard for each other, This reduced Abbots Youth to speculative efforts and long shots, with Alex Cobb in goal dealing efficiently with anything on target. They weren’t able to put the Abbots keeper under too much pressure however, with a long range shot from Jamie Heaffey their best effort.
Two-thirds
of the way through the first half, Abbots finally broke through to score two
goals, but West continued to battle away and keep the score at a very
respectable 2-0 at half time. Unfortunately, due to injuries West had to
juggle the team around for the second half, and this included losing Alex in
goal. Half way though the second period the boys were still battling hard
and had only conceded once more, however the effort they had put in meant
the boys were knackered. Abbots now had more space
in which to attack, and the quality of their passing and movement soon began
to count. A number of goals were conceded late on to see the game finish
11-0 to Abbots; however the West boys shouldn't be too dispirited by the
result, as in league terms this fixture was the equivalent of Arsenal vs St.
Albans. They put in a superb effort, especially in the first half, and lost
to a very good side that will no doubt get into double figures plenty more
times this season. Final Score: Abbots Youth 11 - 0 St. Albans City West |
