St Albans City West vs William Morris Santos  (17th September)

The latest League Cup game was a home fixture against William Morris Santos (WMS), a strong side who were two divisions above West last season. WMS showed their intentions straight from the kick-off as with the second touch of the ball they took a very long shot, trying to lob West keeper Alex Cobb, however he comfortably held onto the shot.

Although WMS began the stronger side, West soon created an opening as a great ball from Jamie Heaffey down the right wing sent Scott Howlett away; however his resultant shot at distance, and from a very tight angle, went behind. Shortly after Jamie had a strong shot from 20 yards but it went just over the bar. The opposition though were also creating chances, with Alex making a number of good saves, unfortunately midway though the half their dominance brought two goals in three minutes.

The boys didn’t let their heads drop though, and continued to press forward when opportunities arose, and from one of them Greg Springall had a good shot saved. West ended the first half 2-0 down but seeing a better share of the play as the half went on.

Although the second half started evenly, WMS grabbed a third after six minutes. This saw West raise their game again, and fifteen minutes into the second half a great move involving Ross Whinnett and Tom Weaver left Greg with a great opportunity in the box which he finished well. Four minutes later Tom and Greg combined again for the Greg to get his second goal of the game (left). This shocked WMS into pushing forward with Alex making a great double save from one of their chances.

West were now looking for an equalizer, which almost came from an excellent lobbed shot from distance by Tom, which went just over, while soon after another chance fell to Ross whose great shot hit the woodwork. Unfortunately an equalizer didn't arrive, and with the final kick of the match WMS scored again to end the match 4-2. The boys should be very proud of their performance though, as they gave a very strong WMS side a real fright in the second half.

Final Score:   St. Albans City West  2 - 4  William Morris Santos

Joint Man of the Match: Ross Whinnett, Alex Cobb and Tom Weaver
