West were under pressure for the
first 20 minutes but the defence of Adam Thornhill, Charlie
Craigen, Jamie Heaffey, Myles Smith and particularly Alex Cobb in
goal mopped up the pressure. West then seemed to settle and get
into the game, and an excellent cross from Scott Howlett looked a
certain goal from a well placed header by Elliott Jay, but the
keeper pulled off an outstanding save.
West finished the half the stronger team with efforts from both Greg Springall and Carl Biggs saved, and Carl just failed to reach a Greg cross flashed right across the open goal. The score was 0-0 at half time, but if West had started the 2nd as they finished the 1st half, the supporters felt it was theirs for the taking, but their hopes were dashed after two quick goals just 2 and 4 minutes in. The first was well placed round the keeper after a misunderstanding, and the 2nd from a long range speculative effort / cross that went right in the top corner leaving the keeper no chance. Again West upped their game and were rewarded when Carl set up Scott to fire a lovely curling shot in top corner. Chris Welch, who had been working his socks off in the midfield, was then rewarded when his cross was deflected in for an own goal. It was now all West and Tom Weaver's effort went just over, followed minutes later by a George Figg free kick from the edge of the area. A great corner from George then looked sure to find the back of the net but it was cleared to Elliott whose excellent shot looked goal bound but went just wide. West looked to have sealed a great comeback three minutes from the end but a shot that dropped on the goal line was scrambled away through a melee of West players. This was a great game for the neutral. Final Score: St. Albans City West 2 - 2 Tornados
