Tornados  vs  St Albans City West (11th March)

West played well against Tornados, but lost this Cup match due to a poor spell in the final ten minutes of the first half. The early stages of the Spring Cup are league based however, and so the boys still have a chance to amend for this defeat.

It could have all been different though, as in the first minute of the match Greg Springall broke down the right wing and superbly turned a Tornados defender to give himself space to cross the ball for Jamie Heaffey, who met the ball with his right foot but his shot went just wide. For the next twenty minutes West were in charge, with the midfield of Tom Weaver, George Figg, Matt Peckham and Jamie dominating play, however while they created numerous openings for Greg and Scott Howlett up front, none were really clear cut.

The game was largely settled in the final ten minutes of the half though, as a Tornados corner was only partially cleared which allowed one of their players to strike a strong shot to open the scoring. Two minutes later Tornados scored again from a counter attack, as a through ball beat a square West defence which their striker reached first. A few minutes before the half ended Tornados scored again in similar circumstances as West pushed forward, but were caught as Tornados counter-attacked, and so
                                                              the first half ended 3-0.

West had to re-arrange the back four at the start of the second half due to a few injuries, but they raised their game and had the better of the possession. Numerous chances were being created, the best of which were from Greg, who saw one curling shot go just over while another hit the post, and Matt, who following good work from Tom hit a great shot from distance, but the keeper saved well. West didn’t give up though, and almost scored a consolation goal in the final minute as George hit a great free kick from 25 yards, but the Tornados keeper (who had a great game) got his fingers to it to prevent a certain goal.

The final 3-0 scoreline was harsh on the boys, who played well for the majority of the game, however a good performance from the opposition keeper, plus a loss of concentration towards the end of the first half, meant the game was lost. The league format for this part of the competition though, means the boys still have three matches left so they can still qualify out of their group.

Final Score:   Tornados  3 - 0  St. Albans City West

Joint Man of the Match: Jamie Heaffey, Tom Weaver and Myles Smith
