St Albans Ranger vs St Albans City West  (3rd September)

West were really unlucky not to draw their first game of the season, a friendly against local rivals Rangers.  West started brightly with a shot after just 1 minute from Charlie Craigen going just wide.  Greg Springall deservedly opened the scoring for West on five minutes when he pounced on a poor clearance and clinically slotted round the keeper.

Ten minutes later a superb shot from Ryan Rickard from a Greg flick on was somehow tipped over by an excellent Rangers keeper. Greg also shot just wide two minutes later. Against the run of play Rangers then found the top corner with a super effort which left Alex Cobb, the West keeper, no chance. As the half progressed West were looking tired and were again punished by a break away goal.  Jamie Heaffey however, had looked certain to level on the stroke of half time after a great run down the right and chip over the keeper, but it went just wide.

West dominated the second half, and levelled after an excellent run and cross from Jamie was tapped in at the back post by Ryan.  Rangers, unfortunately for West, took their few chances as one went in off the post and then took advantage of a poor clearance to go 4-2 up. After that it was all West as several shots went just wide and over the bar and two from Jamie and Charlie were cleared off the line.

It didn't look like West's day until Matt Peckham slotted through to Greg who fired home his second. West continued to pressure but Rangers defended well. It looked like West would snatch the equaliser when Greg made a great run, only to see his shot go just over in the final minute.  If it hadn't been for an excellent Rangers keeper, or with a little more luck, West should have had a draw.

Final Score:   St. Albans Rangers  4 - 3  St. Albans City West

Joint Man of Match: Charlie Craigen and Greg Springall
